Both are national cost guides. Square footage sets the base, and larger slabs usually cost less per foot. Condition comes next, because heavy spalling and many cracks take repair time before any overlay goes down.

HomeGuide prices driveway resurfacing at $3 to $5 per square foot. That comes to $1,200 to $2,900 for an average 2 car driveway. Angi’s driveway range runs wider, at $3 to $9 per square foot. For a bigger driveway, HomeGuide puts a 24 by 36 foot, 3 car driveway at $2,600 to $4,300.
Resurfacing is built for surface damage on a driveway. That means flaking, pitting, spalling from road salt and hairline cracks. A driveway that looks rough but still sits flat and solid is a good candidate.
Spalled and pitted spots get filled flush before any overlay goes down. That work is concrete repair, and it adds to the total. The overlay then goes over the repaired slab, and a clear top coat seals it against daily wear.
How does resurfacing compare with concrete driveway replacement cost?
Resurfacing a 2 car driveway costs $1,200 to $2,900 in HomeGuide’s guide. Tearing it out and pouring new runs about $3,200 to $12,060 once removal is added. So resurfacing lands at roughly 24 to 38 percent of the tear out cost. That math only holds for a slab that is still structurally sound.

HomeGuide prices a new driveway apart from removal, which adds $2 to $6 per square foot. Angi says a driveway too damaged or crumbly to resurface can run $15 per square foot to replace. Tear out also means breaking up the old slab, hauling it off, forming, pouring and then waiting on cure time.
Resurfacing works when the slab underneath is still structurally sound. We check for movement before anything else. A slab broken into pieces that rock underfoot will only crack an overlay again. Sections that have sunk out of plane need lifting or replacement first.
HomeGuide adds that wide cracks typically signal foundation problems that will cause more cracks after resurfacing. It rates resurfacing at 8 to 15 years before repairs. It also says most overlays last as long as the concrete base under them. A quality new driveway should last 30 to 40 years with proper maintenance, by HomeGuide’s count.

Small jobs move fast. On our jobs, many porches and small patios are finished in a day. Larger patios and driveways take longer, since the overlay and the top coat each need their own time.

What does a concrete overlay or stamped overlay cost?
HomeGuide prices a basic concrete overlay at $3 to $7 per square foot. A decorative overlay with color and texture runs $6 to $10. A stamped overlay that copies stone or brick runs $7 to $20. Angi puts decorative and stamped overlays at around $7 to $20 per square foot.
HomeGuide describes an overlay as a thin layer of cement and polymer resin spread over existing concrete. Stamped overlays go over an existing slab, so the old concrete stays put. A single stamped pattern runs $7 to $15 per square foot, and more complex designs run $15 to $20.

What raises the cost to resurface concrete in Utah?
After square footage, the slab’s condition matters most, and Utah winters are hard on concrete. The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association says slabs that freeze and thaw with deicing salts tend to scale. Cracks and spalls get repaired before an overlay goes on. Prep method and access add to the total too.
NRMCA defines scaling as the flaking or peeling of a finished surface from freezing and thawing. One cause it lists is too much chloride deicing salt on concrete that lacks strength or proper curing. UDOT pre-treats state roads with salt brine before storms, and its crews spread salt during them. Tires carry that brine into driveways and garages all winter.
Repair comes before any overlay. NRMCA says a repaired surface will only be as strong as the base it is bonded to. So weak or unsound material comes off first, and a thin bonded resurfacing goes over what is left.

Prep method matters as well. Sandblasting an old sealed patio takes longer than grinding a bare one. Access counts, since a backyard patio behind a narrow gate is slower to work. Indoor overlays add masking and dust control.
