Decorative Concrete Coating
What Is Decorative Concrete Coating?
A decorative concrete coating is an additional layer of protection that’s added to existing concrete floors. These liquid/semi-liquid coatings strengthen the existing structure and reduce the need for repairs, maintenance, adding to the aesthetics of your home or space. Bare concrete surfaces tend to degrade with time due to multiple factors. Indoor flooring can come in contact with chemicals, abrasions, and water. Outdoor concrete floors face extreme temperatures, UV rays, heavy vehicle traffic, and more. All these factors contribute to the early degradation of concrete and the coating helps slow or prevent this process.

Decorative Concrete Coating Options
Thin-Stamped Overlays & Decorative Concrete Concrete
Thin stamped overlaps are the most popular polymer cement products. For already laid-out concrete floors that require a little bit of repairing, professionals apply a 16 to 21 mil thick layer of polymer cement over an existing surface to cover up all the cracks. This polymer-modified overlay proves to be much cheaper than breaking apart the old slab and going through the complete process of pouring a new one.
Custom Interior Flooring
You can choose between a limitless pool of colors and designs for your floor with custom interior flooring. This application has a relatively smooth or moderately textured finish, suitable for indoors like retail stores, shopping malls and lobbies.
Concrete Repair Resurfacing
Concrete repair resurfacing is the process of repairing, restoring, and resurfacing damaged concrete. Instead of removing and replacing old, damaged, or deteriorated concrete, professionals simply apply a thin coating over it. This thin layer provides your floor with a new appearance as well as makes it resistant to UV rays, chemicals, salts, petrochemicals, and more.

Decorative Concrete Coating Process
Here’s an example of the typical decorative coating process.
Step 1: Diamond Grinding Or Sand Blasting
The first step of applying a decorative concrete coating is grinding the floor down for an easier and more precise application. Sand blasting (used for textured surfaces) removes imperfections on floors with deep blemishes, stains, and large divots. Diamond grinding is a less invasive method to remove spots and open pores on floors with minor pits and divots.
Step 2: Hand Grinding
Hand grinding is reserved for the edges that the diamond grinder or shot blasters could not reach. To ensure proper application, it is important to grind down the entire surface from edge to edge. Missing out on this step can eventually result in the coat peeling at the wall.
Step 3: Vacuuming
Once the floor grinding is over, we vacuum the floor to eliminate debris, dust, gravel, or dirt. After prepping the floor, we can begin the coating process.
Step 4: Concrete Coatings
The first layer works as a primer, sealing the floor and hardening the concrete. Next, depending on the preferred thickness, we will apply multiple layers on top of the first layer.
Step 5: Sanding
After the layers are dried, fine sanding the floor helps adhere the layers tightly to the concrete below.
Step 6: Final Coat
Sanding is followed by a final coat applied like all previous decorative coating layers.
Step 7: Caulking Joints
This final step involves cleaning and sealing all the joints along the walls and floor to ensure no dirt or debris gets through.
